This rare 12-year-old expression of Red Hackle Reserve is a hallmark of Scotland’s "golden age" of blending, produced by the storied Glasgow firm Hepburn & Ross. Founded in 1920 by World War I veterans Charles Hepburn and Herbert Ross, the brand was named after the iconic red feather worn by the Black Watch regiment, in which both founders served. This particular bottling, dating from approximately the late 1970s or early 1980s, is presented at a traditional 75° Proof (43% ABV) in a distinctive 26 2/3 Fl. Oz. (757ml) bottle.
As a "deluxe" blend of its era, this 12-year-old reserve features a higher malt-to-grain ratio, resulting in a significantly more robust personality than standard releases. During this period, the company was under the stewardship of Robertson & Baxter, meaning the heart of this blend likely draws from prestigious malts such as Glengoyne, Tamdhu, and Highland Park. It offers a sophisticated, well-balanced profile with elegant notes of soft fruit, hazelnut, and vanilla, making it a prized acquisition for collectors of historic Glasgow whisky labels.
