Ardbeg Distillery — Islay Single Malt Whisky

Ardbeg Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located near Port Ellen on the south coast of the Isle of Islay, Scotland. It was founded in 1815 and is currently owned by LVMH (Moët Hennessy), which acquired it in 2004 as part of Glenmorangie plc. Ardbeg is renowned among Islay malts for producing one of the most heavily peated whiskies in Scotland, balanced by a distinctive sweetness that sets it apart from its maritime, medicinal neighbours.

History

Whisky-making on the Ardbeg site is recorded as early as 1798, but the distillery was formally licensed and established in 1815 by John MacDougall, and it remained in the MacDougall family for several generations. In 1959 it became part of Hiram Walker (later Allied Distillers), and production was mothballed between 1981 and 1989 during a period of industry contraction, with only intermittent operation through the mid-1990s. The distillery's fortunes changed in 1997, when it was bought and revived by Glenmorangie plc, which invested heavily in restoring production and reputation. In December 2004, Glenmorangie plc — and Ardbeg with it — was acquired by luxury group LVMH (Moët Hennessy), which continues to own and invest in the distillery today. Ardbeg draws its process water from Loch Uigeadail and Loch Arinambeast, and its heavily peated malt is credited with giving the whisky its intense smoky character. The distillery's visitor centre and Old Kiln Café are popular stops on the Islay whisky trail, and the annual Ardbeg Day during the Islay Festival of Malt and Music (Fèis Ìle) draws enthusiasts from around the world.

Core Range

Ardbeg's core range centres on heavily peated single malts. Ardbeg Ten (46% ABV) is the flagship expression and a benchmark peated whisky, praised for balancing intense smoke with sweetness and citrus notes. Wee Beastie (47.4% ABV), a five-year-old, is the youngest in the range. An Oa (46.6% ABV) is a softer, more approachable style matured across multiple cask types. Uigeadail (54.2% ABV) combines ex-bourbon and ex-sherry cask maturation for a richer, sherried peat profile, while Corryvreckan (57.1% ABV) is bottled at cask strength with a spicier, more intense character. Ardbeg also releases an annual limited-edition bottling around Ardbeg Day each June.
