Auchentoshan Distillery — Lowland Single Malt Whisky

Auchentoshan Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located in Dalmuir, near Clydebank, in the Lowland region of Scotland. It was founded in 1823 and is currently owned by Suntory Global Spirits. Unlike almost every other Scottish distillery, Auchentoshan triple-distils all of its spirit, giving its whisky an unusually light, smooth and delicate character.

History

Auchentoshan was built in 1823 by corn merchant John Bulloch on the edge of Dalmuir, at the foot of the Kilpatrick Hills near the River Clyde. After Bulloch's bankruptcy in 1834, the distillery passed to local farmer Alexander Filshie and remained in his family's hands until 1877, when it was sold to Glasgow distillers John & George MacLachlan following a poor harvest. The site changed hands several more times through the 20th century and suffered bomb damage during the Clydebank Blitz of 1941. In 1969 it was bought by Eadie Cairns, who rebuilt the distillery, before it passed to whisky blenders Stanley P. Morrison (later Morrison Bowmore Distillers) in 1984. Japanese drinks group Suntory took a stake in Morrison Bowmore in 1989 and acquired full ownership in 1994; following Suntory's 2014 merger with Beam Inc., Auchentoshan became part of what is now Suntory Global Spirits. A visitor centre opened at the distillery in 2005, and it remains one of the closest working distilleries to Glasgow, sometimes marketed as "Glasgow's Malt Whisky".
