Bladnoch Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located on the banks of the River Bladnoch near Wigtown, in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It was founded in 1817 and is currently owned by Bladnoch Distillery Ltd under Australian entrepreneur David Prior. Known as the "Queen of the Lowlands," Bladnoch is one of only six remaining Lowland distilleries and holds the distinction of being Scotland's most southerly whisky distillery.
Bladnoch was established in 1817 when brothers John and Thomas McClelland were licensed to distil whisky on their farm on the banks of the River Bladnoch. Production grew steadily through the 19th century, and following a major modernisation in 1878 output rose to around 51,000 imperial gallons a year, with the distillery earning its "Queen of the Lowlands" reputation.
The 20th century brought repeated changes of ownership and several periods of closure. Irish company Wm Dunville & Co. Ltd owned the distillery from 1911 to 1937, whisky production was halted during and after the Second World War, and the site reopened in 1957 after an eight-year closure. Later owners included Ian Fisher with McGowan & Cameron (1966), Inver House Distillers (1973), and Arthur Bell & Sons, which began further modernisation from 1983 before United Distillers took over and closed the distillery in 1993.
Local wine merchant Raymond Armstrong rediscovered the mothballed site and reopened it in December 2000, releasing Bladnoch's first 8-year-old single malt under the revived ownership in 2009. In July 2015, Australian entrepreneur David Prior bought the distillery, investing heavily in new stills and equipment; production resumed in spring 2017. Dr Nick Savage, formerly of The Macallan, joined as Master Distiller in 2019, the same year Bladnoch opened a new Visitor Centre and café, officially unveiled by the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay.
Bladnoch's modern core range centres on Samsara, a no-age-statement single malt, alongside older expressions such as Adela (15 Years Old) and Talia (25 Years Old). The distillery also produces Pure Scot, a premium blended Scotch whisky, and periodically releases special editions such as Alinta and The Wave series through its Bold, Galloway, and Spirited collections.
