Glen Elgin Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located near Fogwatt, close to Elgin, in Speyside, Scotland. It was founded in 1898 and is currently owned by Diageo. It holds the distinction of being the last Speyside distillery built during the great whisky boom of the 1890s, and for decades its malt served as a key component of the White Horse blend before becoming available as a single malt.
Glen Elgin was built in 1898 by William Simpson and James Carle, with the distinctive pagoda-roofed buildings designed by noted distillery architect Charles Doig. Production finally began in 1900, but the whisky boom had already collapsed, and the distillery was forced to close only five months after opening. Doig is said to have predicted that Glen Elgin would be the last distillery built in Speyside for fifty years — a remarkably accurate forecast, as Tormore was not built until 1958.
The distillery changed hands several times in its early decades before being bought in 1936 by Scottish Malt Distillers, a subsidiary of The Distillers Company (later United Distillers, then Diageo following the 1997 merger of Guinness plc and Grand Metropolitan). For most of the twentieth century, Glen Elgin's malt was used almost exclusively in blends, particularly White Horse, and it only began to appear as an official single malt bottling in the late 1990s and 2000s. Today it remains a working distillery within Diageo's Speyside portfolio, prized by blenders for its rich, fruity, honeyed character, and it continues in production with little disruption to its original layout.
Glen Elgin's official core range is centred on a single permanent bottling, the Glen Elgin 12 Year Old (43% ABV), released as part of Diageo's Flora and Fauna/Hidden Malts series and known for its honeyed, tangerine-and-fruitcake character. Older expressions, including 16, 20 and 32 year old bottlings, have appeared as limited or special releases, and the distillery's malt continues to form an important component of blends such as White Horse.
