Glen Garioch Distillery — Highland Single Malt Whisky

Glen Garioch Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located in Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire, Highland, Scotland. It was founded in 1797 and is currently owned by Suntory Global Spirits (via its Morrison Bowmore Distillers subsidiary). One of the oldest working distilleries in Scotland, it sits in the fertile Garioch valley, long known as the "Granary of Aberdeenshire" for its barley.

History

Glen Garioch was established in 1797 by John and Alexander Manson on the edge of Oldmeldrum, a site that originally combined the distillery with a brewery and tannery. Through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries it passed through several owners, including Bulloch Lade and, from 1970, Stanley P. Morrison Ltd (later Morrison Bowmore Distillers). Production was suspended in 1968 after the local water source ran dry, and a new supply — the "Silent Spring" at Coutens Farm — was found in 1972. The distillery closed again briefly in the early 1980s, was bought and revived by Morrison Bowmore in the early 1990s, was mothballed once more in 1995, and reopened for good in 1997. Morrison Bowmore itself was acquired by Suntory of Japan in 1994, making Glen Garioch part of what is now Suntory Global Spirits' Highland portfolio. In recent years the distillery has undergone significant investment, including a reintroduction of traditional floor malting and a new direct-fired still, restoring production methods once thought lost to the site.
