Laphroaig Distillery — Islay Single Malt Whisky

Laphroaig Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located near Port Ellen on the south coast of Islay, Scotland. It was founded in 1815 and is currently owned by Suntory Global Spirits. Laphroaig is renowned worldwide for its intensely peaty, medicinal, smoky character and is the only whisky to hold a Royal Warrant from the King (formerly the Prince of Wales), reportedly a personal favourite of King Charles III.

History

Laphroaig was founded in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston on the shore of a small bay called Loch Laphroaig on Islay's south coast. The Johnston family retained control of the distillery for well over a century, a rare feat in an industry marked by frequent changes of ownership. Following the death of Ian Hunter, a descendant of the founding family, in 1954, the distillery passed to his trusted manager Bessie Williamson, who became one of the first women to run a Scotch whisky distillery. Laphroaig later changed hands several times through the twentieth century, coming under the ownership of Allied Distillers before being acquired by Fortune Brands (later Beam Inc.) in 2005. In April 2014, Beam Inc. and its whisky portfolio, including Laphroaig, were acquired by Suntory, forming what is today Suntory Global Spirits. Throughout these ownership changes, the distillery has preserved its traditional production methods, including hand-cutting its own peat from the Islay moss and floor-malting a portion of its barley on site, practices that continue to define its uncompromising, heavily peated house style. The whisky's distinctive medicinal, iodine-like character has made it one of the most polarising and most celebrated single malts in the world, and the distillery has cultivated a famously devoted following through its "Friends of Laphroaig" club, established in 1994, which offers members a symbolic one-square-foot lease of land on the distillery grounds.

Core Range

Laphroaig's core range centres on its signature 10 Year Old (typically bottled at 40-43% ABV depending on market), along with a cask-strength 10 Year Old (around 55-58% ABV, batch dependent). Quarter Cask, matured in small ex-bourbon casks for extra wood contact, is bottled at 48% ABV. The range extends to older, more refined expressions including a 15 Year Old, 25 Year Old, and limited older releases such as 27, 30, and 40 Year Old bottlings, all built on the distillery's hallmark peaty, smoky, maritime character.
