Longmorn Distillery — Speyside Single Malt Whisky

Longmorn Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located near Elgin, Speyside, Scotland. It was founded in 1893 and is currently owned by Chivas Brothers, a subsidiary of Pernod Ricard. Longmorn is one of Speyside's most respected but least publicised distilleries, prized by blenders for its rich, sherried, full-bodied character and rarely bottled as an official single malt outside its core range.

History

Longmorn Distillery Company was established in 1893 by John Duff, Charles Shirres and George Thomson, with production beginning in December 1894. Duff, a former manager of Glendronach and founder of Glenlossie, went on to build the neighbouring BenRiach distillery in 1897, but both ventures were badly hit by the collapse of whisky wholesaler Pattisons Ltd in 1899, which ruined Duff financially. Longmorn subsequently passed through several owners before joining The Glenlivet and Glen Grant distilleries in 1970 to form The Glenlivet Distillers Ltd. Chivas Brothers acquired the distillery in 1978, and Pernod Ricard took ownership when it bought Chivas Brothers in 2001. The distillery's still house was expanded over the twentieth century, growing from 4 stills to 8 by 1974, and in recent years Chivas Brothers has invested in Mechanical Vapour Recompression technology on the wash stills. Longmorn marked its 130th anniversary in 2024. Despite its long history and its whisky's reputation among blenders as one of the finest in Speyside, Longmorn has traditionally been used mainly in blends such as Chivas Regal, with official single malt releases only becoming a more consistent focus in recent decades.
