Tullibardine Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located in the village of Blackford, Perthshire, in the Highland region of Scotland. It was founded in 1949 and is currently owned by the French wine and spirits group Picard Vins & Spiritueux (operating as Terroir Distillers). The site has a documented history of alcohol production stretching back to 1488, when it was recorded as the location of the first known public purchase of beer in Scotland, by King James IV.
The distillery was established in 1949 by noted distillery architect William Delmé-Evans, who converted a former brewery on the site — chosen for its access to mineral-rich water from the Ochil Hills and the Danny Burn — into what was, at the time, the first new distillery built in Scotland since 1900. Ill health forced Delmé-Evans to sell the business in 1953 to Brodie Hepburn Ltd, which ran Tullibardine until 1971, when it passed to Invergordon Distillers. The distillery was mothballed in 1993/1995 by its then-owner Whyte & Mackay and lay silent until 2003, when it was bought by a group of private investors trading as Tullibardine Distillery Ltd, who restarted production and began building out the site's own cooperage, warehousing, blending and bottling facilities. In 2011 Tullibardine was acquired by the French firm Picard Vins & Spiritueux, which continues to own and operate it today. The distillery is equipped with two wash stills and two spirit stills and has an annual production capacity of around 2.7 million litres.
Tullibardine's Signature Range centres on Sovereign, a non-age-statement single malt matured in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels (43% ABV), alongside a set of wine-cask-finished expressions named for their finishing cask sizes: 225 Sauternes Finish (43% ABV), 228 Burgundy Finish and 500 Sherry Finish. The range extends upward through aged expressions including a 15, 18, 20 and 25 Year Old, plus limited-edition Marquess Collection and Custodians Collection releases.
