Waterford Distillery is an Irish whiskey distillery located on Grattan Quay in Waterford city, County Waterford, Ireland. It was founded in 2015 by Mark Reynier, the former managing director of Bruichladdich, and is currently owned by Tennessee Distilling Group following a 2025 receivership sale. Waterford is best known for its terroir-driven approach, releasing single malt whiskies made from barley grown on individually named Irish farms rather than blending grain sources together.
The Waterford site began life in 2004 as a Diageo-owned Guinness brewery, built to supply the domestic Irish market before Diageo closed it in 2013. In 2014 the site was acquired by Renegade Spirits Ireland, the company set up by Mark Reynier after he left Bruichladdich on Islay, and converted into a whiskey distillery. Reynier brought two pot stills formerly used at the Inverleven distillery in Dumbarton to Waterford, and the site was fitted out through 2015, reaching full production capacity in March 2016. From the outset, Waterford's guiding idea was that terroir — the specific farm, soil and season a barley crop came from — could be tasted in the finished spirit, an approach borrowed from Reynier's work with single-farm and biodynamic barley at Bruichladdich. The distillery worked with dozens of Irish farmers producing barley under conventional, organic and biodynamic regimes, and released its first whiskies, under the Single Farm Origin label, in 2020. Despite critical acclaim for its Single Farm Origin and Cuvée ranges, Waterford struggled to raise further investment, and the business was placed into receivership in November 2024. In early 2025 the distillery, the Waterford Whisky brand and its intellectual property were sold to the US-based Tennessee Distilling Group for a reported €6 million, while the roughly €40 million of maturing whiskey stock remained the subject of separate legal proceedings. Under the new ownership the distillery has continued producing and selling Irish single malt whiskey under the Waterford name.
Waterford's core releases centre on its Single Farm Origin series, bottled at 50% ABV without chill-filtration or added colouring, with each expression named for the individual farm that supplied its barley (releases have included Bannow Island, Ballykilcavan, Dunmore, Sheestown, Rathclogh and Lakefield, among others). The distillery also produces Cuvée, a more accessible blend of single-farm whiskies, alongside organic and biodynamic editions and a peated expression, all built around the same single malt, single-distillery approach.
