The Dalmore Luminary No.1 is the inaugural release of a remarkable three-part series born from a world-first collaboration between The Dalmore and V&A Dundee, Scotland's design museum. The series unites two visionaries: world-renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma — named the world's most influential architect by Time magazine — and The Dalmore's legendary Master Distiller Richard Paterson OBE, together bringing over six decades of combined craft to the project. Their creative partnership was rooted in a shared reverence for natural materials, particularly wood, which became the philosophical thread binding whisky and architecture into a single, cohesive expression.
The sculptural vessel housing the whisky was handcrafted in Glasgow by craftsman John Galvin, composed of 48 diamond-shaped particles of Japanese oak and Scottish oak held together by threads of steel — one for each year of the whisky's maturation. Kuma's design reflects his signature understanding of natural materials and negative space, with oak diamonds mingling with light from polished metal particles to achieve a sense of balance and harmony — a deliberate nod to the Master Distiller's own art of creating perfectly harmonious whisky. Only three bottles of this exceptional expression were ever created, making the Luminary No.1 not merely a whisky, but a collectible work of art at the intersection of two great craft traditions.
